Celebrity Halloween Costumes: Our Favourite Looks
5 minutes read
One might argue that celebrity Halloween costumes are far more entertaining to peruse than safe red-carpet looks. And if you’re like us, you understand the joy of scrolling Instagram to investigate what actors, popstars and social media stars are wearing to commemorate the spooky season.
Some celebrities have teams of stylists and make-up artists working together to create standout looks. Others go for a more laidback approach – remember Taylor Swift in her squirrel onesie?
We have our favourites, and we wanted to know yours. So, Beauty Daily analysed the most-followed celebrities’ Halloween looks over the last four years to find the looks that resonated with people.
“Halloween is one of the only opportunities we have in the year to push boundaries, have fun and play with the fantastical when it comes to our hair, make-up and outfit inspiration,” says Sarah Joan Ross, Editor of Beauty Daily. “These Instagram findings are fascinating and reveal how celebrities are increasingly moving away from horror-themed costumes. With celebrities being the driving force behind fashion and beauty trends, it will be interesting to see how this reflects in our choice of Halloween costumes as time goes on.”
Below, we’re sharing two lists. First, an edit of the celebrity Halloween looks that we love because they’re inspiring and fun, and most are super easy to recreate. The second list shows what our data revealed to be the most liked Halloween Instagram photos by celebrities from 2018 to 2021.
Enjoy!
Our favourite celebrity Halloween costumes
Tracee Ellis Ross
In 2019, Tracee Ellis Ross dressed as Lupita Nyong’o’s character from Jordan Peele’s horror film Us. She wore the trademark red jumpsuit and even concealed her brows to match Nyong’o’s bleached brows in the film.
Cindy Crawford
We love this look from 2019 when Cindy Crawford channelled a Studio 54-inspired, ’70s disco diva for a psychedelic-themed Halloween party. Her sparkly jumpsuit and faux fur stole were complemented by the voluminous curls in her hair, glossy lips and facial embellishments.
Kaia Gerber
Next on our list is Crawford’s daughter, Kaia Gerber, dressed as 1960s icon Jane Birkin in 2021. The beauty look (masterfully executed by make-up artist Sam Visser and hairstylist Charlie Le Mindu) consisted of dramatic lashes, graphic eyeliner, freckled cheeks and sleek, glossy hair.
Elizabeth Hurley
In 2019, Elizabeth Hurley channelled Uma Thurman’s iconic character in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill. Her costume included a blond wig, a bright yellow jumpsuit and the iconic Samari sword.
Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner
We still think about Joe Jonas, and Sophie Turner’s Halloween costumes from 2018, when they dressed as Morticia and Gomez from The Addams Family. Turner’s make-up accurately mimicked Morticia’s ghostly skin, exaggerated brows, bold eyes and red lips. Jonas sported Gomez’s thin moustache and slick hair.
Alexa Chung
In 2018, Alexa Chung dressed as a mermaid for Halloween. Her look, featuring long bubble-gum pink locks, a shell bra and blue lipstick, was super fun (and easy to recreate if you’re here for inspiration). Her accessory of choice was a plastic bag – a potential reference to the effects of plastic pollution on marine life. We love a costume with a message.
Harry Styles
Who can forget Harry Styles channelling Elton John in a sparkly Dodgers uniform and oversized sunglasses? The look references one of John’s most notable performances – his Dodgers Stadium performance in 1975.
Lizzo
For Halloween last year, Lizzo looked practically unrecognisable dressed as Grogu (baby Yoda) from The Mandalorian. She didn’t hold back and went all out with face and body paint, a pair of fake ears and a platinum wig.
The most liked celebrity Halloween costumes on Instagram
The celebrities that made it to the top (in terms of both follower count and ‘likes’ on their Halloween posts) included many of the Kardashian/Jenner sisters and artists like Ariana Grande, Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj.
However, based strictly on numbers, we discovered that the top nine spots for most-liked Halloween costumes all belonged to Kylie Jenner. Jenner consistently delivered looks year after year, and some of her best costumes include Ariel from The Little Mermaid, a member of The Power Rangers and Barbie.
Our data revealed that despite celebrities being known to organise professional photoshoots for their Halloween looks, candid photos resonate with fans the most. For instance, Kylie Jenner’s post featuring a collection of pictures with her family, where she is dressed as a black cat, racked up the highest number of likes at 14.9 million.
