Expert-Approved Ways To Show Love To Your Nails This Valentine’s Day
Charlotte McHale, Clarins Training Manager, shares three ways to show love to your nails this Valentine’s Day. After all, you can’t showcase them if they’re in poor, brittle condition, so keep these nail tips in mind.
1. Hydrate the nail bed
“Pay attention to hydrating your cuticles, especially if you’re doing nail treatments such as aesthetic nail extensions or using nail varnish remover. They can be dehydrating and damaging. Even if you use an acetone-free one, they can be drying,” McHale warns.
Her first piece of advice is to rehydrate the nail bed.
The texture preference is up to you, and you can opt for an oil or cream based.
“The Clarins Nail Treatment Cream, £25.50 is a great one. It can work into the nail bed; it conditions the cuticles and helps strengthen the nails. In addition, it ensures your hands are completely moisturised and hydrated. It’s loaded with nourishing shea butter, sesame oil and fortifying Japanese mulberry extract,” she recommends.
However, if you prefer an oil, McHale recommends the Blue Orchid Treatment Oil – Dehydrated Skin, £38 or Santal Treatment Oil – Dry Skin, £38.
“The technique to hydrate your nail bed is important,” says McHale. “You must work your way in so the nail bed can absorb the oil. Then, blob on each one and work it in and around the skin,” says McHale.
2. File your nails regularly
“Once nails start to split, it is quite tempting to pick them. But, unfortunately, that will make them worse,” says McHale. Instead, she recommends filing your nails regularly to keep them strong and healthy while giving them your desired shape.
Try: Opi Crystal File, £12.90. This will help prevent your nails from chipping and peeling.
3. Care for the skin around the nails
Lastly, McHale says, “Just look after your hands. Hands get more exposure than any part of your body, and they’re not easy to care for,” she says.
It’s worth mentioning that our hands are one of the body parts that easily reveal our age. Without proper care, age spots, wrinkles, and other serious signs of ageing will start to take notice. To prevent this from happening, apply sunscreen to the backs of the hands in the morning, use hand cream at least once a day, ideally before bedtime, and leave it overnight.
Give your hands overnight TLC with an intensive and moisturising mask.
“Cover hands in a rich hand care cream and cover in cotton gloves for deep absorption,” McHale says.
