A Basic Skincare Routine For Beginners In Quick & Easy Steps

4 minutes read

In the fast-paced world we live in, where beauty trends come and go like fleeting moments, it can be tough to figure out the best skincare routine for beginners. And despite the sea of countless products and elaborate regimens, often the most effective approach is the simplest. Here, Beauty Daily speaks to Clarins Retail Trainer Julie Unwin, to unravel the secrets behind a skincare routine that can transform your complexion and leave you looking radiant every day.

What are the essential steps for a basic skincare routine?

Let’s start by emphasising the power of consistency. Daily routines, especially when it comes to skincare, provide the best results. Committing to even a minimal routine can positively impact your skin’s texture, appearance, and overall resilience.

Essential Steps for Basic Skincare

  1. Cleanse
  2. Tone
  3. Moisturise
  4. SPF

Step 1: Cleanse

The journey to radiant skin begins with a clean slate – quite literally. “Cleansing is the cornerstone of any skincare routine. It’s the process that rids your skin of dirt, oil, and impurities accumulated throughout the day or night,” Unwin says. “By starting with a clean canvas, you’re setting the stage for the products that follow to work their magic more effectively,” she adds. For this crucial step, we recommend Clarins Hydrating Gentle Foaming Cleanser £24, a mild yet effective formula that leaves your skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. To make the most of your cleanse, gently massage the cleanser onto damp skin using circular motions for 60 seconds, then rinse off with lukewarm water.

Step 2: Tone

Once your canvas is clean, it’s time to bring balance back to your skin’s pH levels. This is where toning comes in. “Whenever skin is touched by water, it’s natural pH balance is automatically knocked out of sync. Toner helps to rebalance the skin and help purify, soothe, hydrate, and even keep blemishes at bay. It also helps ensure any lingering traces of make-up, and impurities are swept away,” Unwin explains. When picking your toner, it’s best to consider your skin type and your current concerns as this multi-tasking step comes in a plethora of formulas with an array of actives to target a range of skin issues. Our top pick for very dry or sensitive skin is the Clarins Soothing Toning Lotion £36, a soothing formula rich in organic camomile and purple coneflower extracts that soften, hydrate, calm, and revitalise the skin. “Apply your toner using a cotton pad, and gently swipe it across your face as well as your neck,” adds Unwin.

Step 3: Moisturise

Now that your skin is cleansed and toned, it’s time to seal the deal with a dose of moisture. “Hydration is the key to maintaining your skin’s suppleness, preventing dryness, and supporting overall skin health – making no basic skincare routine complete without a moisturiser,” shares Unwin. Opt for a lightweight, hydrating moisturiser like Clarins Hydra-Essentiel [HA2] Silky Cream £38. This gem not only provides the essential moisture your skin craves but also forms a protective barrier against environmental aggressors like pollution. Apply the moisturiser to your face in upward motions, allowing it to melt into your skin, to leave you with a silky-smooth finish.

Step 4: SPF

Sun protection is arguably the most important stage of your skincare regime. “It’s crucial to apply an SPF product to your face and neck every day, even if it’s raining, cloudy, or both. This is because the sun still emits its ageing UVA rays, even when it’s not shining bright,” explains Unwin. These rays can penetrate the skin and speed up the ageing process. Try Clarins UV PLUS [5P] Anti-Pollution SPF50 Translucent £34, a gel-based cream that protects skin from a range of environmental aggressors – think UV rays, pollen, blue light and air pollution.

Another high-tech and effective offering is the myBlend Hydrating Antioxidant Screen: The SPF50 Face Cream, £40, which contains a high UV filter, vitamin E for antioxidant action and an anti-pollution system to help protect skin from oxidative stress.

These four steps might seem basic, but they work in perfect harmony to create a foundation for healthy skin. Cleansing clears the path, toning restores equilibrium, and moisturising locks in the goodness, while an SPF shields your skin from the elements. You really can’t go wrong with this fail-safe basic skincare routine.
